Lessons from outer space

When will I learn?.....

Driving is the car I thought it would be funny to ask Tyler a question....

Mom: "Tyler, do you know why boys go to mars?"

Tyler: "no why?"

Mom: "Boys go to mars to get more candy bars!" Tyler starts laughing.

Mom: "Tyler, do you know why boys go to Jupiter?"

Tyler: (still giggling) "no why?"

Mom: " Boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider!!!"

Tyler: (laughing harder, stops and pauses...) "Mom, why do boys go to Venus?"

Mom, Dad and Jared laugh hysterically..... conversation over.

Ode from my Bro.....

This is written by my little bro., Nate (see the end for my response)

Ode to Linda:

She writes poetry on her blog,
when she should be cleaning up after Brent the slob;

She sits you in a chair to cut your hair,
and she always has diet coke to spare;

I know her dirty laundry, but she knows mine,
this makes us get along just fine; (or else...)

Her smiles and laughs brighten the room,
And we now know on Sundays she does more than spoon;

and as a mom, she is the bomb,
even though when I was little she made up the I hate Nate song.

Love ya sis! (you too Brent...I had to rhyme something--I know who the messy one is)

I am impressed!!

Nate has the Rees rhyming gene,
When we were little, I was mean?? (Innegar...sniff, sniff)

I think he's funny, smart and brave,
check him out in The Man Cave.

Vap-O-Huh?

A big shout out to my friend Lisl who told me about Vic's vapOrub.(emphasis on the 'O')

Apparently, if your kids are coughing uncontrollably, you slather the stuff on the bottom of their feet, put on some socks and ....wah-lah!!! They stop coughing. Weird, but I googled it and many people know it, too. I just did it again for Tyler and he fell right back to sleep after nights of severe coughing.

Ode' to vapOrub... j/k

Now the magic trick for me going back to sleep?........ um......the 'off ' button on my computer...

Ode to losing my marbles.....

Ode to losing my marbles.....

Coughing, coughing in the air,
coughing so much it causes despair.
"Cover your mouth!!" to your siblings...be fair,
The last thing I need is a coughing pair.

Germs, germs are all around,
from the ceiling to the ground.
I might be hearing things, as my head does pound.
Do you think germs make a sound?

Sanitize, sanitize like a mad girl.
Through the bathroom & kitchen in a whirl.
Nasty germs make me want to hurl. (sorry it's a stretch)
oh hey...I found the marbles, they were in the laundry room.......

Ode to a home teacher.....a poem

There once was a home teacher named Nate,
Who's messages were always great!
If we ever needed help,
All we'd do is yelp,
and he'd be there and not hesitate.

One day our problem wasn't small,
to our teenager it seemed like "the fall"
The computer had a virus or fungus....
luckily a computer genius was among us,
Mighty home teacher could fix the "fire wall".

The problem was too technical for me,
My explanation would cause you to flee
Thank heaven for the home teacher,
who happened to be a good preacher,
Who fixed it and made us happy.

Before Nathan, was doom and gloom.
This problem, over us did loom.
I thought I'd implode
but now I can download
And once again can enjoy an Itune.

A big shout out for AWESOME Nathan Crapo who fixed my computer tonight. My running was suffering because I was sick of my Itune songs. Thanks to MC, too, for "urging"him to come over. I'm good if this counts for Home teaching for the rest of the year! Love you guys!!!

THANK YOU !!! THANK YOU!!!

Valentine Do-Over

My family has a really fun Valentine's Day tradition. It started when the kids were little, babysitters were hard to come by so we started our own family valentine dinner. We had a candle light dinner with spaghetti, garlic bread and salad. Also, sparkling cider with a fancy table setting with a red table cloth. The kids called it "dinner with fire". Over the years, we have had so much fun celebrating as a "fam" and on the weekend, Brent and I try to go out together.

This year we took a last minute trip to St. George for baseball so we weren't home to have our "fire dinner". So, I am going to pretend that NEXT Saturday is Valentines Day and do it then. It's all good, right?

I heard a man once describe Valentines Day in kind of a sad way. He said, "If you think about it, men have no where to go but down on Valentines Day. There's so much pressure to do something nice that when you do, you don't gain any ground....you just did what was expected. If you mess up, obviously you lose ground with your wife. It's a no-win situation." I think that's sad. I hope it's not like that for most people. I love Brent and I hope to show him every day, especially on the day designated for an outward show of affection.

So, if you were disappointed with V-day this year....have a do-over. It's never too late to let the most important person in your life know how much they mean to you!

Monday morning blues

How do you know it is going to be a LONNNNG day?

I woke up earlier than usual this morning. After running around the house getting kids to school, picking up morning mess, getting everyone dressed, picking up more, checking blogs, starting laundry, checking e-mail, paying bills, running around more, I paused....thinking it's probably almost lunch/nap/workout time (Yeah!). NOPE, 9:30......It's gonna' be a long day.....

Good Morrrrrrning!!!

Okay...let me warn you...I could be slightly bored slash boring lately, but here goes:

How do you know you are a mom of a boy.....
I was laying in bed this morning trying to find the will to go on one more day(too dramatic?). Tyler came bouncing in my room happy to be here, welcoming the day in his special loud happy way. He jumped into my bed and snuggled into me to "get warm". Next thing I know he is climbing all over me trying my patience trying to get me to get up for the day. All of the sudden he stuck his face into my armpit(seriously) sniffs loudly and says, "Mom, your armpits smell amazing!!!" Nice.

I choose to think that he is so nice that he wanted to give me a compliment, my breath was out,...hair...?nope....make-up...hmmmm. Needless to say...I was up and outta' bed. :)

One quick edit to my post...a big shout out to my formerly sweaty friend B-ill J-earden(name changed to protect identity ;) who first blogged about a new deodorant. I first tried it for my teenagers and liked the smell so I use it too. What's my "Secret" you may ask? Is it "clinical strength sport"? Sorry, I can't tell you...ha-ha Not only are the results Amazing(to quote Tyler) but you can "run and not be smelly, walk and not have others around you faint". (Hmmm... could advertising be in my future?)

ok, I am super bored, I'll admit it, I thought of that in the shower and I laughed out loud........perhaps some grown up time is severely needed (could be a cry for help)

French Fry Tax?

Imagine my surprise when I heard "Utahns are willing to vote to raise their taxes again." lol
You might know that I will have an opinion on this.
Just because you don't like something doesn't mean you can raise taxes to discourage use. What's next????French fries...seriously they make us fat....that's not healthy. I just heard of a "fat tax" being imposed on soft drinks in New York, not on diet drinks, just the the potentially fat causing ones. When do we say enough is enough. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean you can tax the "heck" out of it to discourage its use. Think about it, smoking is a choice...perhaps a bad one, but it is a choice. Once you start taking away freedoms, where does it stop? They justify the tax increase by saying it will eliminate the food sales tax....a worthy cause, sure. However, at the same time they are taxing smokers, discouraging them from smoking, they are relying on the revenue (from people smoking)to fund other programs. It just doesn't make mathematical sense.
I want the government to stay out of my business. First cigarettes, next Pepsi....think about it.

Also, I first heard this story on channel 2 news, they took the liberty of breaking down how many LDS members supported the tax making it seem like we were ready to wage another war like we did with prop 8. Belonging to whatever church you see fit is another freedom. When will they start attacking that too.(Oh wait, they already have)

In short(ha-ha), be careful, my friends. The news was able to slam smokers and church members on a bill that is only being proposed in the Utah Legislature. When the bill gets voted down I bet we'll see it on the next ballot for our vote.

Blessings and trials

angels-round-us

“I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand, and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts; and my angels round about you, to bear you up.”
D&C 84:88

I have been pondering what exactly this means not only to me but to all of you. I recently re-read a book by President Eyring in which he says that we all need to learn how to call down the blessings from Heaven that are available for us. This is a blessing that I too often forget about.

So, my quick post today is a reminder that the Lord not only knows our circumstances, but goes before us to prepare the way, while constantly being by our side and in our hearts with angles to bear us up. It is our responsibility to seek His guidance and direction through our trials so not only do we get through them, but we gain a deeper testimony along the way. If you don't feel the love of God right now, ask yourself ....why? Are you seeking it? Is there something keeping you from feeling it?

Now for one moment, think of how in hindsight, the Lord prepared the way for you. Now think of your current trail and try with foresight to see what might be being prepared for your benefit. That seems to help me have a positive outlook when faced with adversity.

Some of the best advice I have received was from a friend who was faced with the un-employment of her husband. She said that she received a prompting to not panic and worry so much or she would miss the blessings and miracles in their life that came as a result of their trials. I too have seen miracles that would have otherwise been missed were it not for her kind words.

Take a deep breath, the Lord "....will go before your face. He will be on your right hand and on your left, and His Spirit shall be in your heart; and His angels round about you, to bear you up."

Inauguration prayer?

Don't blog angry...good advice. I'm not so much angry as insulted.....

Yesterday at the Inauguration of President Barack Obama at the end there was a benediction. I don't even know the guy who did it, nor do I wish to give his name a mention. At the end of his so-called prayer he had a little "poem" which basically went like this.
"May the black no longer have to sit in the back,
May the brown get to hang around,
May the yellow keep it mellow,
May the red-man get ahead man,
and may the white finally see the right."
I have never been racist. I find it completely deplorable. But if you listen closely to the people who scream and cry about racism...generally they are putting down white people. Isn't that discrimination? We live in the United States of America. I love our country. It truly is the land of opportunity. I am not an eloquent orator. Things sound better in my head than when I read them on paper. Racism is about hate. I would dare guess that white racists are in the minority, that being said, isn't that last sentence in the "prayer" racist?

It's just my two cents...I'm tired of people saying that I am racist when in fact....I am not. And I would guess, neither are you.

Sunday Hymns

I don't know if you can tell, but I am typing on my newly returned, from Gateway repairs, computer. YEAHHH!!!! I feel different some how.....

Since I feel different, I am blogging in a different way today...
Since it's Sunday(bearly), my thoughts have been directed to the hymns(I am the chorister). I love the hymns, they are sung to help us feel the Spirit, to renew our faith, to express our testimonies and many other reasons. One hymn I am particularly fond of is "How Firm a Foundation". Many times as I have sung that song, I felt like it was written for me.

How firm a foundation, ye Saints of the lord,
Is laid for your faith in his excellent word!
What more can I say than to you he hath said,
Who unto the Savior for refuge have fled?

In every condition- in sickness and health,
In poverty's vale or abounding in wealth,
At home or abroad, on the land or the sea,
as thy days may demand. so thy succor shall be.

Fear not, I am with thee oh;be not dismayed.
For I am thy God and will still give thee aid.
I'll strengthen thee, help thee and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by my righteous omnipotent hand.

I personally have relied heavily on the words in the last verse. I have personally felt the strength that only came from God helping me to stand. I have personally felt the joy that came after realizing that the Lord was by my side and I did not need to be afraid.

I hope my friends have felt it too. If not, rely on others testimony while you search for your own. The Lord is there, waiting for us to turn to Him. The 7th verse (which is of course, never sung) says:

The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose
I will not, I cannot, desert to his foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I'll never, no never, no never forsake!

The words uplift me every time I read or sing the song. I hope it will uplift you too. Happy Sunday!

How do I know you love me....

I have decided that I could write a complete blog on the funny things that Tyler says. He is a sweet little guy who always is looking to give me a compliment. Tonight, after dinner, he threw his arms around me and said, "the pizza was so good tonight mom...you pick up the BEST dinner!" See, you don't need a home-cooked meal to show your family how much you care.

Don't judge me, again

Ever had one of those days? I am constantly amazed at the noise level in my house. With the extremely loud boys and crashing cars and toys, and (I adore her....however,) Katelyn has.. let's just say a LOUD voice that carries. ( carries in a horrific way to pierce the center of my ear drum!) Anyhow, it was dinner time and my nerves were shot. I lovingly placed the beef strouganoff on the table with the yummy asiago cheese artisan bread from Harmons bakery and I really wanted to enjoy my meal. I went to my newly organized phone desk drawer and pulled out two of the most beautiful ear plugs I had ever seen. I took my hair out of the poly-tail (for camouflage purposes) and put in the heaven sent noise reduction devices. Dinner was nice. I could still hear everything I needed to all the while my ear drums were protected by my new neon orange friends. Half way through dinner Jared started laughing a little and (he has always been my fav....I mean a great boy) stifled his emotion and kept my dirty little secret. Thanks....there will be a little something extra in your allowance this week Jared!
By the end of the meal, I had had enough quiet and took them out. I highly recommend this to anyone who needs a little less noise in their ears for a moment. Trust me, everything is still loud enough to hear, but stifled enough to enjoy. Try it, you might like it.

As for wearing red, sorry Ute fans, I bleed blue(gross) =) And big thanks to my bro Nate..I'll start doing the thing for Brent that he wants most, and deserves I might add, at least 5 times this year...heck maybe even every day.......I am going to cook for him. Maybe even twice in one day! Wow, I'm tired thinking about it!

Help!! I need Resolutions!

For 5 or so years now I haven't been making New Year's resolutions for several reasons. Obviously if I wanted to loose weight I'd have done it by now.(besides, when I loose it, it always finds me again) Generally, I do a decent job of studying the scriptures, praying, ect. Although I strive to improve daily, I am happy with myself in general.(I am not being arrogant, really) I just don't like to set goals and fail by February, which is usually how it went with me. I respect people who set New Year goals, I admire even more their accomplishments. That is why I am calling on my bloggin' wonderful friends for a favor. I would like you to help me set my New Years resolutions.

Here are the rules:

-I'm not quite ready to give up diet coke =)

-If you say "loose weight" my resolution will be find new friends (hee-hee)

-I am fairly "un-offendable" (except rules 1 and 2). So go ahead and be honest (gulp!)

A few suggestions:

I'd secretly like to run a 5K. I run slash walk on my treadmill 2-3 miles 3 times a week so maybe I could work up to it.

my husband and I go on a date once a year (whether we need to or not) so strengthening marriage ideas are good.

I want to get my concealed weapons permit but don't know how.

Now, these are just suggestions, but I really need the originality that you awesome bloggers have.
I put this in your capable hands....thank you for your thoughtful consideration.
My year depends on you! (no pressure)

Bye Bye 2008

I've really been trying to give serious thought to my New Year slash old year recap post. So, I've decided that in looking back, I will recap some of the most important lessons I learned in 2008.

2008 started with me going of of blood thinners and regaining my appetite(good and bad) I am grateful for Western medicine that saved my life after the birth of our youngest. I hope that the next time I am that close to death I am old and don't come back! It was a scary 6 months for my family. That being said, never in my life have I been able to learn more about myself and my Savior, and the Gospel. All three of which I learned to love more. Throughout the various trials of my faith that I have been blessed with I have learned many things. One is, The Lord never leaves us. He wants us to repent always and be worthy of His help. I especially learned how to listen to the Spirit and the promptings that will come.

We have 3 seasons in my house, Basketball, softball/baseball, and football. The year was busy with all three. We had a few trips to St. George, but the highlight was our trip to Omaha, Nebraska. I know, you're thinking you can see boring for free! I had never been to that part of the country...it was green and beautiful. The night we were driving was the night of a huge tornado that killed 4 boy scouts in Little Sou ix, Iowa. (which was very close to our hotel) Driving into tornado conditions is scary. We pulled off the road to wait out the storm. We were grateful to be behind schedule with our 15 hour drive or it would have been more dangerous.(which is even a longer story but makes me again realize the Lord's hand in our lives)

Summer was over before we knew it. Next was football season....nothing good to report. But I learned that every day is opportunity to be a better person. To forgive quickly, return good for evil, and most important...everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt. I continue to work on these things and am happy to say, it gets easier!

The holidays were fun, blah, blah, blah.....j/k

I've learned:
-life is short and precious (who uses words like precious?)
-it CAN get worse and it's okay
-what would Jesus do? is not a silly question your dad used to ask but something we should ponder and strive for.
-I like blogging

So, there's the scary insight into my life, here's to 2009! (if I could drink, I'd raise a glass)

One funny quick post

I am pondering my year in review slash resolutions, but I had one funny experience. I was in my room when I heard a little commotion. It grew louder and louder until I heard Katelyn yelling, "gimme' that!!!" Tyler yelled back, "you are a CRR-AZY person...you are a cra-a-azy person. Get off me...YOU ARE A CRAA-ZYYYY PERSON". By that point I was running to rescue Ty when I saw Katelyn, red-faced,laying flat on top of him reaching to take away something that belonged to her. I separated them (with much effort) and Ty is still screaming (you guessed it "You are a crazy person!!!" I had to hide my laughing to get to the bottom of the problem. Honestly, at that point, I didn't care.(don't judge me) Do you ever feel like you conflict resolution skills go like this, "who was wrong last time? Okay, your right this time, now go play."
Kinda' makes me wonder, what kind of a 5 year old says that? (obviously mine!)
